SWCP Part Two: Day 2 Portscatho to Gerrans Bay, Walking in the rain and cute Cornish cafes

Campsite: Field
Campsite cost: £10
Tip: You can grab a snack at a local pub/restaurant in Portloe before another 6 miles to Gerrans Bay. You can also grab a bite in Portholland Beach (which is before Gerrans Bay) by visiting independently run ‘Pebbles Cafe and Crafts Shop.'

A fairly gentle start to the day with a little rain that continues all day. I actually prefer if it’s raining a bit and cooler as it makes walking conditions easier. The first 8 miles to Portloe are nice and easy, for which I am grateful as I’m still recovering from being ill a couple of days ago (see my blog post when I made it to Falmouth to find out why).

Passing through a little Cornish Village

There are hardly any people on the trail as it’s raining on and off all day. I’m happy to have some peace whilst making my way through the route. In the rain the leaves and landscape become a richer olive green and auburn; everything seems more beautiful in the rain somehow.

The rain becomes heavier at one point so I take some shelter under trees on my way to Portloe.  The terrain was quite flat compared to previous days for the first stretch but then the last 3 ½ miles to Portloe were quite steep inclines and descents a few of times! Caught me off guard after a gentle start. The path was a little slippery from the rain but the hiking poles helped give balance.

It was raining a little on and off all day which made cooler walking conditions

I grabbed a cup of tea and some food in Portloe which was a welcome break from the rain. I knew the next stretch to Gerrans Bay is strenuous so I prepare mentally for a long day, likely finishing at 6pm. I find wild fruits like apples and blackberries along the trail to snack on.

The sea was calm today

When I make it Portholland beach there is a welcoming and cute cafe-craft shop called Pebbles Beach by a friendly lady who sells homemade tasty cakes, as well as little homemade gifts. Highly recommend. I had the best walnut and coffee cake. Honestly, its when you are on the trail and have little food you really begin to appreciate the smaller things.
