SWCP Day 8: Porthcurno to Penzance, My first swim in the refreshing sea

SWCP Day 8: Porthcurno to Penzance, My first swim in the refreshing sea

Campsite: Ponsandane Campsite (Summer Campsite)
Campsite cost: £10
Tip: Lands End is busy with local shops to resupply.

One of my most favourite sections as I got to walk through a very friendly and typically cobbled Cornish village with blue boats moored up on shore. I also managed to have my first swim of the trail! The water was cold on my warm, clammy skin but refreshing. Not long after I stepped up onto shore I could tell my muscles had relaxed so I rested a while longer on the sand, in the shade of the cliffs. Being very pale I have to keep out of the sun as much as possible and wear a hat, although I’m a sun baby and love the heat.

The first part of the trail was quite strenuous for the first 3 hours but the swim had rejuvenated my spirits and I knew I could make it to Penzance. Other hikers informed me that at Mousehole Harbour the trail is mostly flat concrete, so it will be easy to walk. That was definitely the case. I absolutely loved Mousehole seaside town. It was one of my favourite towns. There were lots of great seafood cafes and plenty of snacks. I stopped and ate some fish and chips to admire the views. It was busy but I didn’t feel overwhelmed like at Lands End.

Mousehole Harbour - one of my favourite Cornish towns

I walked the rest of the way to Penzance on the concrete, flat trail. I discovered that walking on concrete and flat ground is quite tiring but in a different sense because it’s repetitive and feels like you’re moving slow. But nonetheless I was grateful when I got to my campsite and easily navigated route. I googled ‘campsites Penzance’ and just turned up saying I was a Walker. I tend to do that these days as they rarely turn you away and generally will always find you a spot - particularly as I have a one-man tent travelling alone.
